Underage drunk driver blamed for major power outage by police

Police say an underage driver who was under the influence caused a power outage for hundreds of Central Hudson customers.

On Tuesday evening, shortly after 10 p.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding a car accident. The report said a car had crashed into a telephone pole on North Broadway in the village of Red Hook.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found a 2016 Volkswagen Beetle that had struck a telephone pole on the east side of the roadway and snapped it in half. The vehicle, driven by Emily Cavotti of Red Hook, had damaged the pole so badly that it caused “major power outages” in the village and town of Red Hook.

Footage of the incident shows the vehicle off the road under the broken telephone pole. The post, broken into two pieces, also contained a streetlamp that narrowly failed to tear the car apart. Live power lines were torn from the pole and left hanging in the street. Stuck in the ditch by the side of the road, the car appears to have suffered a broken windshield.

The 20-year-old driver was not injured, but police say she was drunk. During an interview and road investigation, police determined that the driver was operating the vehicle under the influence and using an electronic device prior to the accident.

The driver was taken into police custody without incident and charged with two counts of impaired driving, both offenses, and using an electronic device while driving, constituting an offense. Cavotti was treated and released on orders to return for a future court date.
