Millennials are blamed for recent wave of COVID in San Francisco

Half of all COVID cases in July in San Francisco were from patients aged 25 to 39.

SAN FRANCISCO, California – Millennials are largely responsible for the sudden increase in COVID cases in San Francisco, some health experts have said.

Infections in adults aged 25 to 39 accounted for 50% of all COVID cases in July, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Data from the city showed that adults aged 25 to 34 have the lowest vaccination rate among all age groups eligible for vaccination, with around 72% having received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Dr Peter Chin-Hong, professor of medicine specializing in infectious diseases at UCSF, told The Chronicle that low vaccination rates as well as the tendency of young people to be more social than other groups were the main causes of infection.

The infection rate in San Francisco has now exceeded that of the state.

As of July 30, there were 21.9 cases per 100,000 in San Francisco over an average of 7 days while there were just 16.7 cases per 100,000 statewide, according to government data of State.
