Democratic Congresswoman Cori Bush said she spent nearly $ 70,000 on private security after being the victim of life attacks.

The Missouri representative, who has repeatedly called on her party to fund the police, spent just under $ 30,000 a month between mid-April and the end of June, according to Federal Election Commission documents.

Representative Bush, 45, hit back at critics who said she was hypocritical to withhold private security guards while calling for cuts to police funding.

“Would they rather I die?” She asked when asked about CBS News spending.

“Would you rather I die? Is that what you want to see? You want to see me die? You know because that might be the alternative,” she said.

A provocative Bush representative said she would continue to hire security personnel because she has too much work to do.

“So suck it up, and the police funding has to take place.

We need to fund the police and invest that money in social safety nets.

Republican critics have taken to social media to accuse the so-called Squad member, a group of progressive Democratic representatives, of high-profile hypocrisy.

Bush says it’s important enough to have its own private security, but the police that protect the rest of America must be funded, Georgian Congressman Jody Hice wrote.

Arrogance is only surpassed by madness.

Calls for police funding emerged from the 2020 civil rights protests against the death of George Floyd.

Representative Bush is one of many left-wing Democrats who have called for police forces to be stripped of some of their resources and redirected to social services such as mental health crisis centers.

Funding the police has also become a rallying cry for Republicans to mock their Democratic opponents in the 2020 election, but has never been seen as a viable political platform within the party.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Thursday that President Joe Biden was not in favor of police funding during a press briefing.

The story continues

He said it throughout his election campaign. Her track record over the past decades has made it clear, Ms Psaki told reporters.

There may be some in the Democratic Party, including Congresswoman Bush, who disagree with him, that’s OK.

But I would say the majority of Democrats, we’ve seen it in the polls, and the majority of members also agree that we shouldn’t fund the police.

Representative Bush spoke to CBS News from the steps of the Capitol where she camped several nights this week to protest the end of the moratorium on rent evictions.

In an 11-hour decision, the Biden administration extended the moratorium on evictions in areas with high rates of coronavirus transmission.

Ms. Bush was supported by Squad Team member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
