A 63-year-old New Jersey woman was charged Thursday with obstruction and other offenses following a parking lot accident that killed a 31-year-old woman in Passaic County.

Digna A. Lazala, of Randolph, allegedly drove an SUV on Tuesday that struck and killed Chloe Villar-Severino outside a supermarket in Clifton, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and the chief of the Clifton Thomas Rinaldi font.

Villar-Severino was taken to St. Josephs University Medical Center in Paterson, where she died on Wednesday, Valdes said.

Although Ms Lazala was driving the car that hit Ms Villar-Severino, she told police she was not involved in the collision, the prosecutor said in a statement.

Lazala was charged on Thursday with obstructing the administration of the law or other government functions and obstructing arrest or prosecution, both misdemeanors, Valdes said.

She also received traffic summons for reckless driving and failure to report an accident, Valdes said. If convicted of the disorderly charges, Lazala faces 6 months in prison, Valdes said.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call investigators at 1-877-370-PCPO or 973-470-5904.
