The opioid epidemic is a real tragedy that has claimed thousands of lives.
But critics say a video recently released by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is the opposite of reality. They believe it was rigged. Many call it copagandaa mashup of the words “cop” and “propaganda”.
The video shows a rookie officer who allegedly overdosed on fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be up to 100 times more potent than morphine.
The video shows an officer collapsing suddenly moments after handling a substance identified as fentanyl. His superior officer then quickly summons an ambulance and administers naloxone. This substance is used to treat narcotic overdose.
The deputy survives. His senior officer says “he would have died in this parking lot if he had been alone.”
SDCSD says the video of the “overdose” is taken from the officer’s body camera footage. The department said it did not know if the officer was exposed by touching or inhaling the drugs.
Critics on Twitter don’t buy it.
Several thought the officer had passed out or had a panic attack. Others believe the video was staged.
Some who doubt the veracity of the video have verified accounts and identify themselves as medical professionals with experience in drug treatment. A Twitter user who describes himself as a doctor and the spouse of a police officer said touching fentanyl does not cause an overdose. “…[T]This is not how fentanyl works.
Some have noted that experts like the American College of Medical Toxicology agree that accidental overdose, such as handling the drug, is “unlikely to cause opioid toxicity.” The ACMT also notes that exposure to fentanyl can only occur by air in “exceptional circumstances”.
I have responded to dozens of fentanyl overdoses. They don’t fall in a controlled manner like this person. Also, why are this man’s lips pink? If he couldn’t breathe, his lips would be blue and his skin ashy. It has a very beautiful color. I am okay. Panic attack. Heat. No fentanyl

If fentanyl is so dangerous, how did you manage to get it from the truck to the patrol car?
And your boot isn’t wearing gloves when handling evidence AND narcotics? Please
You really should have thought about it a little better before going public.

Auto fix – was supposed to be fentanyl but fantasy works too

Truth! I had a drop of fentanyl on my hand / finger when I drafted it for a patient and it hasn’t killed me yet.

Many believe that SDCSD should be taken to task for “lying” to the public. Several suggested that the ministry delete the tweet.
SDCSD tweeted that it was sticking to its video.
“We know what really happened and our assistant almost died from exposure to fentanyl.”
