Martin Scorsese’s previous reviews of franchise and comic book films have come under fire again with James Gunn commenting on the matter in a recent interview and now Aquaman star Jason Momoa is also donating his two cents on the matter.
Speaking with “The New York Times,” Momoa shed a very different light on the genre compared to some of Scorsese’s more pointed critiques. Momoa said, “It’s like the way people say music is pop and that music is cool. But you know how hard it is to get your music out there for people to hear? subjective. I try not to choose anything. So, yeah, superhero movies are gum, but they’re like Greek mythology: they have good and bad and heartbreaking moments. And, my God, you take away other art forms if you stop doing them. effects, you take away what you can do with makeup. “
Momoa’s comments actually make a lot of sense, especially when he says a lot of these things are all subjective. Comic book movies don’t try to be a cab driver and they’re mostly popcorn entertainment, but they do have some great sweeping moments that elevate them to a more epic scale. The whole concept of good versus evil, which has been at the heart of much of our storytelling, can very well be achieved in comic book movies if handled properly. Momoa goes on to say that this genre has allowed him to tell stories he wants to tell:
“I’m not someone who is hired to star in a lot of movie theaters, but by being able to make a superhero movie, I can make a movie about something that is really close to my heart. vision for the whole of Aquaman. There are environmental issues that I can put into it. So while you’re like, “Oh yeah, it’s just that popcorn movie,” I’m like, “Well , I can open people’s eyes to things that are important to me. ”
Martin Scorsese, who is considered by many to be one of the best filmmakers of all time, made comments that went viral in 2019 and seemed to demean comic book movies as a whole. A lot of people took his one comment that they weren’t movie theater and used it as if he said they were lower quality compared to other movies and genres. Scorsese returned to some of his criticism a bit after his initial comments, saying that comic book movies, Marvel movies in particular, have some defining elements of cinema but there is no “reveal, mystery or real emotional danger “.
You’ll find plenty of people who champion the comic book genre and others who strongly agree with what Scorsese has said in the past. I think these factions have split equally because the defenders of both are not wrong. There are some comic book movies that lack some of the qualities Scorsese talks about, while others definitely hit that mark. Some are made for popcorn entertainment while others are made for exploring bigger ideas. The good thing about loving movies is that there is room for both and we can all be equally entertained and moved by whatever we choose to watch.
