Limestone mining, which was ongoing at the foot of the slope in Kali Dhank until 2019, triggered the collapse on July 30 of a 150 m section of the Paonta Sahib-Shillai road (NH-707) , reveals a preliminary study from the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

A three-member GSI team, which visited the site on August 3-4, submitted their report to the district administration on Sunday.

He says, “The slope was weakened due to mining near his toe. Recent heavy rains triggered the incident.

The study suggests that the new road alignment should avoid a stretch of distress rock mass found at the shoulder downstream of the landslide near road level. A minor break in slope was recorded at its foot.

Although the village of Barwas, located further upstream from the affected site, appears to be on stable ground,

upstream mass, including village settlements, should be observed frequently for any ground signature of slope instability, the report suggests.

Vivek Mahajan, sub-divisional magistrate of Paonta Sahib, said: “Several measures have been suggested by the GSI team to stabilize the slope, both while restoring the road and undertaking its widening. The company concerned was invited to comply with the suggestions.

The GSI team consisted of Manoj Kumar, Director, Engineering Geology Division, Pradap Jagan R, Geologist, and Abhinav Poonia, Assistant Geologist.
