Former first lady Melania Trump has torn apart a presidential historian who criticized renovations she made to the White House rose garden.

Michael Beschloss, an NBC contributor and historian specializing in the US presidency, took to Twitter on Saturday to castigate Trump’s changes as an “evisceration” and an affront to American history.

“The evisceration of the White House rose garden was completed a year ago this month, and here is the grim result of decades of American history gone,” Beschloss wrote, alongside a photo from last year’s garden which doesn’t show many flowers.

Melania Trump’s office Twitter account retweeted the message, accusing Beschloss of being “misleading” and of doubting his credibility as a historian.

“@BeschlossDC proved their ignorance by showing off a photo of the rose garden in its early days. The rose garden is adorned with a healthy and colorful bloom of roses,” the tweet said, alongside a photo of the rose garden which shows more of flowers in Bloom. “His misleading information is dishonorable and he should never be trusted as a professional historian.”

Trump announced in July 2020 that he would renovate the Rose Garden, which is frequently used by US presidents for speeches and other appearances. The renovation was revealed in August of last year.

This year, a petition calling on First Lady Jill Biden and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff to reverse Trump’s changes and restore the garden to its previous state garnered more than 80,000 signatures, Insider’s Thomas Colson reported.

Some people had criticized the removal of 10 crabapples, which the White House said had been moved elsewhere on White House grounds, and the removal of some colorful flowers.

But Reuters reported that many of the widely shared claims about Trump’s renovations were false.

A photo of the rose garden shared by Jill Biden in May shows colorful flowers that cannot be seen in the photo posted by Beschloss. Biden captioned the photo, “Spring is here at the @WhiteHouse!”
