Monday, August 9, 2021, 4:06 p.m. Press release: Union des taxpayers
Responding to reports of a legal bill for $ 30,000 from Palmerston North City Council as she sought to stop a group from hosting an event at a public library, the spokesperson for the Taxpayers Union Neo -Zeeland, Louis Houlbrooke, said:
How can the board say that it does not have an opinion on the costs it has incurred? It is a disturbing lack of penance in the face of such a damning court judgment. Is the board’s position that it has learned no lessons here?
Crs Rachel Bowen, Lorna Johnson and Aleisha Rutherford must admit they messed up and imposed unnecessary costs on taxpayers by trying to end an event that shouldn’t even have been echoed on their radar. Their illegal actions have come at a cost to taxpayers. “
Local councils across the country are expected to take the High Court’s decision as a warning. Council-owned sites can be used by all taxpayers and cannot be used by ideologues to misrepresent political groups they disagree with.
