Bernard Allotey Jacobs, former president of the central region of the NDC
Former central region chairman of the Democratic National Congress, Bernard Allotey Jacobs confessed to blackmailing when he brushed aside corruption allegations against former President John Agyekum Kufuor years ago.
A newspaper at the time edited by Ambassador Victor Smith claimed that President Kufuor had collected a bribe of $ 5 million from a Kuwaiti oil tycoon.
Smith in 2009, barely a year after Kufuor’s departure, reconsidered his allegations when he appeared before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee where he admitted he had no proof of what he had put in the public domain.
Years later, Allotey Jacobs also admitted that trumpeting Smith’s allegations had nothing to do with facts but blackmail.
We only yearned for power, so we were only blackmailing, he said, adding that he had asked the Pope for forgiveness.
I went to confession in Rome and informed the Pope that this was what I had done, so he should forgive me and ask me long life. .
Besides Smith and Allotey Jacobs, Kokrokoo host Kwami Sefa-Kayi noted that current Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin was also among those who propagated the false allegation.
On the current policy front, Allotey Jacobs, who has been kicked out of the NDC, said his interest was in trumpeting the good works of the current government because he wanted to see Ghana move forward.
What is wrong with fooling the right people? It’s the person who tries hard who deserves a boost. I want this government to do well, especially the president and his deputy. I want Ghana to move forward, not always one step forward, two steps back, he said.
