But Dr Karan Raj explained that if you have stinky pits, it could actually be genetics.

Posting on TikTok, he explained why you might have the armpit smelly gene and how to spot it.

He said: “If you have a genetic mutation in the ABCC11 gene, your body will not produce a certain type of protein found in armpit sweat that bacteria feed on to cause underarm odor.

“Less than 2% of people have this genetic mutation and almost all Koreans are protected against stinky armpits and have this genetic mutation.”

SPOT THE SIGNS

Dr Karan explained how you can spot the signs and it’s not due to how sweaty your t-shirt is.

He said: “The ABCC11 gene is also responsible for the type of earwax.

“If you have wet earwax you have the stinky armpit gene, if you have dry earwax you will save a lot of money on deodorant.”

A previous study by the University of Bristol found that only 2% of Britons carry the gene.

Experts said the link between smelly armpits and earwax could be due to the production of amino acids.

The study also found that people with the trait were less likely to wear deodorant.

At the time, they said the study could shape people’s deodorant buying habits and could save people money because many might not need to wear deodorant. .

If you have the armpit smelly gene, you may need to take better care of your armpit health than others, and Wild deodorant brand expert Emily White said there are a number of things you can do.

She explained that you should take the same care for your underarm routine as you do for your facial routine.

Emily explained, “Double cleansing has been the name of the game for facial skin and hair care for the past few years, but what about our underarms?

“Give them double the attention you would give to other parts of the body by using a neutral cleanser or body wash to clean the underarm skin as part of your morning shower routine, and during the warmer months. , double with an evening cleanse before bed! “

She said you should also exfoliate your pits once or twice a week using a gentle exfoliant.

According to her, it would help get rid of dead skin cells and unclog pores.

In addition to cleansing, Emily also said that you should hydrate your armpits several times a week to soothe the area and keep it soft.

An unscented moisturizer is best under the arms, she added.

If you’re very aware of smelly pits, Emily said you could even try an aluminum-free deodorant.

Aluminum is found in some antiperspirants, and it causes yellow stains on your clothes when it comes in contact with sweat.

Emily said: “You should also look for products that contain tapioca starch, an absorbent powder taken from the roots of the cassava plant that keeps you dry without blocking your sweat glands.

“Another ingredient is baking soda which is antibacterial and therefore prevents the formation of body odor and keeps you smelling fresh all day, even on busy days,” she added.
