Although the State Fair of Texas would sign a nondisclosure agreement for all dealers participating in the Big Tex Choice Awards this year, SideDish was still able to secure an exclusive interview. Because when Big Tex got everyone to sign these deals, he made a 12-foot boot-sized mistake: he forgot to sign the fried talent himself. So we did what good journalists do. We called Deep Fried I-35 directly, and they were more than happy to tell us their story ahead of the August 11 Big Tex Choice Awards finalists announced at State Fairs. (As a reminder, here are all the fried products in contention at the moment.)
Deep Fried I-35 is a perfectly nice fried brisket kolache that came out and made poor lifestyle choices. Our peach juice combines with Dr Pepper to make a sweet and tangy BBQ frosting that we drizzle with our brisket kolache. We garnish this rollable concoction with slices of peach and a pinch of powdered sugar.
This fried State Fair of Texas semi-finalist’s announcement for the Big Tex Choice Awards drew a series of reactions, including praise and enthusiasm from people who haven’t carefully read the description of the article to repeat the vomit emojis of all who have made it. read after the name of the dish.
Despite the controversy surrounding the use of sweet and savory flavor profiles in a competition that is now split into sweet or savory categories, Fried I-35 is a favorite up for grabs.
We caught up with the semi-finalist who splits to talk about their feelings as they fight to advance to the final, their non-traditional route on the worst highway ever, and their strategy to win the title of Best Savory at the Texas State Fair. Tex Choice Grand Prizes.
First of all, Deep Fried I-35, thank you for taking the time, despite a busy schedule, to sit down and chat with us. And congratulations on making it to the Big Tex Choice Awards semi-finals. What do you think of your chances of qualifying for the final? I feel ready. I have the impression that Pete Delkus rolls up his sleeves at the start of a thunderstorm. I know for a fact that I am offering something much more innovative than anyone else. Half of the other competitors in the field are enjoying the BTexas Easter Eggs list vacation? Fried Halloween? Go on. And the other half of them have corn as the main ingredient, like bacon corn bombs and crispy corn. Nap party. Fletchers perfected the presentation of portable corn in the form of their classic corn dog. No one else should even try.
I think he’s a nerdy dog, actually. Fletchers Corny Dogs. And wasn’t the corn cob the OG of portable corn? The point is, there is no competition. I’m going to win because I look cool enough that people are going to have to try me on their own to find out if they love me or hate me. And that’s the perfect winning recipe for this contest. So I don’t even think about the final, I’m already thinking about the victory.
In your description, you are named Deep Fried I-35 due to the road trip you take to acquire your ingredients. You go from Parker County (peaches) to West (kolaches) to Dublin (Dr. Pepper) to Austin (chest). We polled him on MapQuest, and it looks like you could save a few hours by taking US 281-S for the most part. I-35 is the highway equivalent of a fire in layers. Is the I-35 really the way to go on this trip? Sometimes the most obvious road to victory isn’t the smartest. Deep Fried US 281-S doesn’t sound exactly the same, does it?
The flavor combination you try is something you’ve been working on for almost a year. It’s a move that no one else in the field would have even thought of attempting. Fried peaches, of course. We saw that. It’s incredible. But the peach juice and the brisket? Why? And then, for some reason, you add Dr Pepper? What about powdered sugar? I’m sorry, is there a question here?
How do you respond to accusations that your flavor combinations are dangerous and sound unpleasant?
I do not know. The chocolate coated fried strawberry waffle balls on a stick looked pretty tough the first time I heard it. Some people say flavors work.
Yeah, in that case, is that like, some people say, TikTok is a sport, or like, some people say, turkey burgers are real burgers, or like, some people say, Thanksgiving is Friday? Because some of these people are downright incorrect. Guess you’ll just have to wait and find out for yourself.
Were you sure you saw the Instagram story the fried GOAT Fried Coca-Cola posted last night regarding your involvement in the semi-finals. The eloquent BTCA winner added the words WACO SUCKS to your Deep Fried I-35 profile picture. What’s your reaction ? Waco is awesome. He’s got these super cool Chip Gaines billboards, where he pretends to be God and talks about stopping to smell cupcakes or whatever.
I saw these billboards. I was shocked that he didn’t make them from dashboards. I also had plenty of time to drink from their smart posts, due to the two hours I spent stuck in construction traffic there. That’s all I can think of when I hear your name, to be honest. Chip Gaines and the taste of the fresh F-150 exhaust.
To wrap up here, assuming you qualify for the final, who do you see as your biggest competition for this Best Savory title? If Frozen Ranch Water succeeds, I’m screwed. Dallas loves a Ranch Water. The one thing they would love more than ranch water is low calorie ranch water and somehow Frozen Ranch Water got it. But I’m already asking for their withdrawal from competition because it’s not fair to have a drink in the same category as food. Plus, they should be DQed for doping wine-based tequila, and everyone knows that.
