Birminghams Rose Room drug allegation investigation ‘inactive’ after 7 complaints filed

Birmingham Police have investigated seven complaints from people suspected of being drugged at the Rose Room cocktail bar or adjacent 220 Merrill restaurant, according to case reports obtained by Metro Times.

Despite the striking similarities in the allegations, police said the investigation was no longer active due to a lack of hard evidence.

The complaints were lodged following reports in March about several women saying they thought their drinks were spiked in the Rose Room. At the time, the women said they ordered a drink or two, passed out, and woke up sick and numb.

Between March 23 and July 9 this year, six women and a man filed police reports in which they said they passed out after consuming a drink or two in bars. The incidents occurred between October 2019 and June 12 of this year.

On June 12, a 37-year-old woman told police that she and a friend ordered a mojito from the Rose Room and quickly became very ill.

I started to feel very sick as if I was going to pass out, she wrote in a witness statement. Things got a bit blurry. I felt like I needed to sit down. I walked over to a bar stool. My right arm started to go numb. My friends gave me water and patted me because I was sweating so hard like I was having a cold sweat.

Police obtained video from the Rose Room and said they saw no suspicious behavior or activity.

In May, a woman said she passed out after ordering two drinks at the Rose Room. After she left, she was arrested in Royal Oak for drunk driving. Three days later, she tested positive for high levels of GHB, known as the date rape drug. But according to police, the doctor who reviewed the results said that GHB, which is produced naturally in the body, will not show up for a test more than 18 hours after ingestion.

He also added that the human body, under stress, can create high levels of GHB, the investigator wrote in a police report. Based on this information, the tracing would not coincide with the period of the reported incident.

In March, a woman told police she had vomited all night and passed out until the next morning after drinking a cocktail in October 2020 while on a work outing with co-workers and clients. At dinner, she spilled a glass, shattering the glass. She called her boyfriend to come get her.

After drinking a vodka and a coke in February, a woman told police that a bouncer had to get her out of the bar and help her get into the car, the police report said. She became seriously ill and was vomiting so much the next day that she had to take prescription medication to quit.

In October 2019, a woman said she had passed out and vomited a lot after having a drink. She passed out on a sofa for several hours.

I woke up completely disoriented, shaking and cursing, she wrote in the witness statement. I was completely confused as to what had happened.

In November 2020, a woman started feeling dizzy and dizzy after starting her third drink. She fell as she left the bar. The next morning, she couldn’t remember what had happened. She said she spoke to a manager the next day, but never got a response.

In January 2020, a man said he drank two gin tonics while hanging out with a friend and several Detroit Pistons players. He walked over to his car around midnight and decided to rest in the passenger seat. He woke up at 4 a.m. very drunk. He said his friend felt the same.

In March, Metro Times interviewed seven women who suspected their drinks were spiked in the Rose Room because they had felt dizzy and passed out after a drink or two.

On Tuesday, one of the women, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she was disappointed the investigation was inactive and is considering asking the Michigan attorney general’s office to review the case. But, she concedes, it’s hard to prove that clients are drugged without more tangible evidence.

I’m afraid this will happen to more women, she told Metro Times. They must be held accountable.

Allegations that women were drugged at the Rose Room date back more than two years, according to reviews on Yelp and Google. On June 28, a woman wrote in a Google review that she was hospitalized after consuming two drinks at the bar.

NEVER GO TO THE PINK ROOM !!! the woman wrote. I went there on Saturday night and ended up in the hospital. I drink a LOT and after just 2 hits I backed up completely and had no idea where I was or what was going on around me. I never believed the allegations until, unfortunately, it happened to me. I don’t know how this establishment is still open. I am very upset ladies PLEASE go somewhere else! It’s not worth the shot.

Since 2017, Birmingham Police have been called to the Rose Room and 220 Merrill at least 33 times for complaints unrelated to drug suspicions, according to police records. The complaints range from fights to intoxicated women who pass out.

Metro Times could not reach Rose Room for comment.

In a social media statement in March, the Rose Room insisted it was unaware of “anything like this that ever happened at the Rose Room,” despite the fact that the bar responded to reviews alleging that people’s drinks were spiked.

“We take these claims seriously. There is nothing more important than the health and safety of our customers,” Rose Room management said in a statement. “We encourage anyone who thinks they have had a worrying experience at our facility, or any other, to notify the police as soon as possible. We have contacted those who claim to have had these experiences at our facility and hope to have the opportunity. to learn more directly from them. ”

According to the statement, the Rose Room discussed the allegations with staff.

“Rest assured, we have confirmed that the policies and procedures we have in place for the safety and security of our guests are in place and being followed,” the statement read. “We have already interviewed all of our employees who were working on that date, and we have no indication that the repeated claims on social media are true.”
