GEORGE TOWN, August 11 DAP General Secretary Lim Guan Eng today denounced the arrest and investigation of several people who allegedly insulted Kedah Mentri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, calling it abuse of power.

The former finance minister said the government was using the police as a political weapon.

If it was only insults, I always received insults but the police never acted, so why were four people arrested for insulting Kedah MB? he told reporters in a brief press conference here outside the Northeast District Police Headquarters.

Lim, who is also an MP for Bagan, said officials should be prepared to receive criticism and slurs because of their position, and added that he frequently received criticism and slurs when he was a federal minister and Chief Minister of Penang.

If the charges are baseless then take them to court, why stop them, he said.

Lim said police should only take action if there are death threats or threats of injury.

He was commenting on the arrest of individuals in Kedah for allegedly insulting Sanusi on social media.

It was reported that Sanusi had filed a complaint against his detractors through his officers.

Police are investigating the case under section 14 of the Minor Crimes Act 1955, section 504 of the Penal Code and section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The arrests drew fierce criticism from the public with allegations of double standards.

Sanusi recently made a controversial joke about Covid-related deaths, but later apologized for it.

Lim said his apology showed he had made a mistake while uttering the joke, so there was nothing wrong with others criticizing him for his tasteless joke.
