Newly acquired left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. will be a centerpiece of the Kansas City Chiefs’ new offensive line. After two seasons at the Pro Bowl in Baltimore, he’s part of a change of identity in the Kansas City trenches as they look to protect their quarterback and revamp their rushed offense.
Major investments in the five positions turned a group of disparaged positions into the force of the offensive. Kansas City is as far down the line as they have been since 2005, with cover bets that they will be able to dominate up front all season. With precious cargo under center, every snap will be crucial in the pursuit of another Super Bowl.
Brown is more ingrained than the alleged Super Bowl aspirations of teams. He told media on Tuesday he was excited for the first preseason games as a boss and to prove his worth, especially in the racing game.
I’m always anxious to block, Brown told reporters. I’m just super excited to go out there and do my job to the best of my ability. It gives me the opportunity to show the fans, the organization and all my teammates, just a little bit of what they have and I’m super excited to get out there.
His teammates seem to have taken a special note as fierce competition has arisen between Brown and the star defenders on the other side of the ball in practice.
We have some really good endings here, Brown said of Chris Jones and Frank Clark. I did a ton of great work with Chris and Frank. Chris is a monster. His abilities and what he can do, I’m sure he’s going to have a great year. I’m just super excited to be on my team.
There has been an iron-clad mentality in this year’s training camp that suits a team that just made two back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Having brought in new talent like Brown, Joe Thuney and Kyle Long, the team are hoping to get as much, if not more, from their new starters compared to their previous teams.
Brown appears to have an extra chip on his shoulder to prove he’s fit for the role to anyone who doubts his abilities. His time in Baltimore has been mostly spent blocking for the Ravens’ electric racing game, but in his new role, passing protection will be paramount to the team’s success.
I can’t wait to be able to shake off the stigma that I can’t play left tackle in a first pass offense, Brown said in his comments on Tuesday, whatever the scheme in Baltimore, whatever it is, this is what I look forward to, can’t wait to block one-on-one guys, can’t wait to take advantage of all these different situations in passing scenarios and really try to put showcasing my abilities and talent.
Of his contributions for Saturday’s preseason game, Brown has let the media know what he hopes to demonstrate the most, albeit in limited action.
My tone, my state of mind, my mentality and my consistency, ”he said. “I don’t know how long I’ll be there, however long; I’ll give it my all. So I can’t wait to be able to present and express all these different things about my game.
With games only counting in about a month, Brown seems to fit in with the Chiefs so far. If training camp was any indication, his contributions could transcend all expectations of the 2021 NFL season.
