Pressure mounts on Metropolitan Police to investigate sex allegations against Prince Andrew

Pressure on British police to investigate the Duke of York increased on Thursday following the sexual abuse trial in which he is named as the sole accused.

Metropolitan Police Service Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick has confirmed that no one is above the law when asked about the allegations surrounding Queens’ second son.

Although she declined to talk about individuals, she did confirm that Metropolitan Police would re-examine whether an investigation into the allegations related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is necessary due to the apparent ongoing civil case in the States- United.

A royal expert has warned that Britain’s failure to cooperate with the United States could strain transatlantic relations.

Prince Andrew is being sued by Virginia Giuffre, who alleges she was forced to have sex with him when she was 17, for unspecified damages. Prince Andrew denies claiming to have slept with Ms Giuffre and says he has no recollection of ever meeting her.

When asked about the investigations into the allegations against Prince Andrew, who stepped down from royal duties in 2019, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner said: I’m not going to talk about individuals, but what can I say, c ‘is that I think what you’re referring to is associated with Jeffrey Epstein, who I’m going to talk about since he’s passed away.

Virginia Giuffre filed a lawsuit against Prince Andrew on Monday the first time the Duke of York faced litigation over allegations Ms Guiffre was forced to have sex with him when she was 17 . He denies the allegations.

Ms Guiffre is an alleged victim of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in his jail cell while facing sex trafficking charges in 2019.

Following the trial, Metropolitan Police said they were reconsidering their decision not to investigate to find out whether crimes were committed by Epstein in London.

Ms Guiffre claims she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew at the Mayfair home of Epstein’s friend Ghislaine Maxwell in 2001.

And the position is that we have had more than one allegation related to Mr Epstein and we have looked at them, assessed them, and we have not opened an investigation, Dame Cressida (inset) told LBC Radio.

The Met, she said, considered three investigative factors; proof of a crime, jurisdiction and whether the person against whom the crime is alleged is still alive. We have concluded that there is no investigation to open.

Dame Cressida added: I am aware that there is currently a lot more media commentary and an apparent civil court case going on in America and we will, of course, be reconsidering our position. But at the moment, there is no investigation.

Responding to whether Prince Andrew is above the law, she said: No one is above the law.

Prince Andrews’ legal team has not commented on the remarks made by Dame Cressida or the trial.
