When New York State named the $ 4 billion Tappan Zee bridge replacement in 2017, residents were already complaining about Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s surprise decision to honor his father, the late Gov. Mario Cuomo.
But now that the governor is stepping down amid a storm of sexual harassment allegations, the pressure to restore the old name is mounting, according to local media.

“The renaming of the Tappan Zee Bridge was an Andrew Cuomo cosmetic vanity project,” left-wing MP Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, who represents the same region where Cuomo grew up, told the New York Post on Wednesday. “Given our imminent change in the administration regime to a new chapter, I think it’s appropriate to have a clean slate in several ways, including returning the bridge to its old name.”
The original bridge in the foreground has been demolished.
CUOMO ACCUSATORS RESPOND TO GOVERNOR’S RESIGNATION
Ed Day, the Republican Executive of Rockland County, told the Hudson Valley newspaper Lohud that the historic bridge had been renamed without any input from the people who lived nearby, many of whom still call it the Tappan Bridge. Zee, whatever sign says.

Mario Cuomo ruled New York for three terms between 1983 and 1994. He died in 2015, two years before the new bridge was completed.
The name Tappan Zee comes from the Dutch settlers of the 17th century, the name of a group of Native Americans who lived in the area and the Dutch word for the sea.
The original bridge was demolished.
