The Lions didn’t really set the world on fire in their 16-15 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Friday at Ford Field. They produced just 248 yards of attack total – 141 passing yards and 107 rushing yards.
But, that was at least to be expected in the team’s first preseason game for the 2021 NFL season.
It was Dan Campbell’s debut as Detroit boss, and he wanted to showcase his healthy starters – a variety of them first appearing in Lions uniforms – for about a quarter of the action. .
It wasn’t the most popular decision for him to showcase his first stringers in the No.1 preseason game, but he did it anyway. Perhaps that was a sign of things to come for Campbell, who certainly isn’t shy about beating at his own pace.
This gave Detroit fans gathered at Ford Field a glimpse into the squad’s first-team offense and defense, giving fans a reason to be excited about an exhibition contest by. elsewhere meaningless.
Fans had the chance to experience rookies Alim McNeill and Ifetu Melifonwu, as well as offseason free agent acquisitions Tyrell Williams and Jamaal Williams, for the first time in a live-action game. Each of the aforementioned players enter the 2021 campaign with expectations that could be described as “medium level”.
Each of them surely deserves attention and should contribute on a weekly basis during the coming season.
However, neither of them should catch the attention of new Detroit signalman Jared Goff and rookie offensive lineman Penei Sewell on a game-to-game basis.

Goff, former LA Rams and successor to center Matthew Stafford, and Sewell, the organization’s 2021 first-round pick (No.7 overall), entered Friday night’s game with arguably the biggest expectations of all first year Lions players. .

And, like most of the players who faced off against the Bills, they produced mixed results.
Goff finished the night 7 of 9 for 59 yards and led the Lions on a field goal in the first quarter. But, he also narrowly escaped an interception on his first pass attempt of the game.
Meanwhile, the former Oregon star in Sewell looked like a freshman pro for the majority of the contest.
Most notably, he was beaten early in the first quarter by Buffalo defensive end Gregory Rousseau, the No.30 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Rousseau walked around Sewell and joined Goff for the bag.
For anyone now saying that Detroit made a mistake in writing Sewell, please stop. You are making a complete fool of yourself.
It was a game – and on top of that, it was an irrelevant preseason game.
He is expected to face his stumbling blocks as a rookie, especially after not playing a single 2020 snap in Oregon.
The 20-year-old has a lot of football ahead of him, and remember, he should improve in every game he plays.
So let’s not jump to conclusions about Sewell or Goff or anyone on this Lions team after a game.
It would be completely wrong for any fan or expert to do so.
