Photos and video footage showed dozens of white people rioting on Saturday at a rally in Los Angeles to protest COVID-19 vaccination warrants during a violent protest that the Los Angeles Police Department ( LAPD) is accused of having let it happen.
Video journalist Andrew Kimmel tweeted footage showing the eruption of violence, including suspected members of the Proud Boys throwing punches and kicks at anyone near them – presumably counter-protesters – as the rally was sinking into chaos. The video also showed a person with a hidden face, appearing to repeatedly stab people with a short knife or other sharp object.
Eventually, the Los Angeles Daily News reported that one person had to be treated for stab wounds and was hospitalized in serious condition. Even more glaring is the fact that the LAPD made no arrests while at the scene and was aware in advance of the event which reportedly drew around 500 people.
A local reporter said he was “pushed” and “cut off” and his glasses “ripped off” his face. However, Frank Stoltze – who said this has never happened to him in his 30-year career – has not publicly identified his attackers.
But the LAPD later on its Instagram page blamed the violence on “Antifa and the people gathered for the authorized event” despite witnesses claiming it was the Proud Boys who started the riots. Instead, the LAPD said it opened an investigation into the violence.
The LAPD’s attribution of blame to Antifa without evidence gave credence to growing suspicions that police were trying to cover up the Proud Boys, who have reportedly enjoyed a pleasant relationship with law enforcement in the past, critics said. on social networks.
As a perspective, right-wing conservatives have repeatedly called Antifa – short for “anti-fascists” – the “alt-left” by people like former President Donald Trump and others who share his political views who generally correspond to those of the police. . Notably, Trump and his supporters pushed the lie that it was Antifa and not supporters of the former president who illegally broke into the U.S. Capitol on January 6 and tried to block Congress from certifying the election of Joe Biden.
The rally was held in response to California’s new mandate requiring admission of proof of vaccination in public facilities like restaurants, movie theaters, gyms, bars and stores.
Opponents of the vaccine warrants have said it violates their personal rights despite the proliferation of the COVID-19 delta variant that has ravaged Los Angeles and many other parts of the country.
As a perspective, Los Angeles County on Friday reported 4,200 new cases of the coronavirus as well as evidence of the new lambda variant COVID-19.
Public health officials have repeatedly called vaccinations the best protection to help bring the pandemic under control, hence the mandate of vaccines.
But the warrants did not go well with the so-called anti-vaccines refusing to take the vaccine, leading to violence on Saturday – something that could be a glimpse of how other cities and towns States will respond as more vaccine mandates be adopted across the country.
Los Angeles city officials have said calling the policy a “vaccine warrant” is a misnomer.
We weren’t going to tell somebody, no one to get the shot. We were also not going to deny anyone the ability to access essential food, medicine, regardless of immunization, ”LA City Councilor Mitch OFarrell said last week. “It wouldn’t be legal, it wouldn’t be moral. But what is immoral is choosing not to be vaccinated.
O’Farrell added: We have to stop fighting science and start fighting the virus. “
