HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hospitals are dangerously full, state officials say, limiting care not only to COVID patients, but others who seek emergency help.
Limited space in Hawaii hospitals could lead to even stricter new rules in just a matter of weeks.
I’m saying we’re two to four weeks away at this rate of seeing major adjustments in what we’ve been able to do, Lt. Gov. Josh Green said.
On Sunday morning, Green said 300 people had been hospitalized with COVID-19. Among them, more than 270 are not vaccinated.
It’s a small minority who otherwise doom the company to lockdown and potentially large-scale death, Green said. No one wants to shut down businesses, no one wants to put curfews in place, no one wants to restrict normal life or schools, but we have to keep people alive.
Green added that as of Sunday, 58 of Queens 68 intensive care beds were full. At Hilo Medical Center, the hospital reports that all 11 intensive care beds are occupied. Six of which are COVID patients. There are 12 other patients in the hospitals’ COVID unit.
This means that for non-COVID and trauma patients, emergency care may not be available when they need it.
Loudest, most opposite provocative people who think it’s fun, they think it’s like party number one: I will probably take care of them in the hospital with my colleagues because they will catch COVID and go to intensive care. And I will do it honorably, said Green. And I want to take care of everyone, but these same individuals doom everyone in society to much more lockdown.
Meanwhile, the lieutenant governor had a harsh message for protesters who gathered outside his condo in Honolulu last week, making their opposition known.
Honestly, if they want to protest, they should protest against me at my lieutenant governor’s office, not the people who have children in my condominium. I mean it’s, of course, callous and heartless to do this to innocent individuals, he said.
Green has made his position clear on blanket immunization mandates. He believes that people have a right to choose and that no one should force them to be vaccinated. But he thinks that weekly testing and wearing a mask is the bare minimum people can do.
If you want to come for me, come for me guys. And I will have a worthy discussion about what is safe for society, he added.
I don’t care if people protest against me. I do not blame anyone for freedom of expression. But when people behave like a crowd and are in fact intimidating and threatening, they are intentionally trying to make it harder for science to win… they don’t do better for themselves.
Green says it’s too early to see the impacts of the latest round of restrictions announced by Governor Ige. But he predicts that if we continue on the current trajectory, hospitalizations could skyrocket to 400 in the near future.
