DAILY POST recalls that the PDP, since February 29, 1999 during the first elections in the Fourth Republic, was in power especially at the federal level until March 31, 2015, when the party currently in power, the APC, was in power. took power.

The quest for change is at the origin of the emergence of the APC which was formed on February 6, 2013 to fight allegations of corruption and bad governance made by the current opposition party, the PDP.

However, the trust placed in the CPA, according to some Nigerians, has been betrayed because some believe that the party is more corrupt than the first and lacks good governance. This sparked the historic protest in 2020 (end of SARS) which resulted in the deaths of many young people.

Having lost confidence in the two main parties, some Nigerians concerned, especially young people who spoke to DAILY POST in Abuja, have expressed their readiness to support any other party that could become a third force in the upcoming general elections of 2023.

Recall that the alleged marginalization of young Nigerians led to the formation of the Young Democratic Party (YDP) which was registered on April 1, 2014 but could not gain popularity during the previous elections.

In a conversation with DAILY POST on Saturday, a senior lecturer at Benue State University in Makurdi, Dr John Ogi described the two parties as sectarian groups whose activities indicate a lack of a development agenda. .

The university don who believes change is possible, however, said more emphasis should be placed on individual capacity, stating that a candidate from an unpopular party may have the capacity necessary for development. from the country.

He said: “Change is the most constant thing on earth and where we are in our development race we should be more interested in capacity than in party platforms, the man who can deliver. can come from an unpopular party once it can deliver.

“APC and PDP have been over-flogged and their activities are more like rituals than development-oriented practices.”

Social media influencer and socio-political activist in the Federal Capital Territory, Comrade James Adebayo said the PDP and APC had failed in the country, hence the need to try other platforms.

“We are yearning for change in the country due to bad governance and this is what led to APC’s victory in the 2015 general election, but unfortunately we did not succeed.

“We will never tire of anticipating change. I am very optimistic that we will achieve the desired change someday. We want to see a better party stand in the next election and I will give it my vote ”.

A PDP actor in Bwari Abuja Regional Council who preferred not to be mentioned for fear of being victimized, told our correspondent that he was fed up with both sides. According to him, for young people to be fully involved in politics, they must have their own party.

“The truth is that we are all tired of old men who retrain at the expense of those who have development projects in the country,” he added.

However, Mr. Aguredam Keghter Moses, State Coordinator, African Union Commission on Youth, Benue State Section, who spoke to DAILY POST in Abuja, said he it was not about the party but about the integrity of the candidates.

“If the new party has the same old crop of politicians, will it be different from the APC and the PDP?” The problem is not the party but the people, ”he said.
