A trust named after famous film critic and director Chidananda Dasgupta is expected to celebrate his centenary in November with screenings, commemorative lectures and an exhibition of his works. The celebratory events, scheduled for November 20 and 21, will also include a competition for the best first feature film and best film writing in the past five years, a spokesperson for the Chidananda Dasgupta Memorial Trust told PTI.

The trust, created by family members including the daughter of director-actress Aparna Sen, friends and admirers, aims not only to pay tribute to Dasgupta, but also to encourage beginning filmmakers and practitioners of the critical writing of cinema.

The best first director will receive Rs 1 lakh and entries will be judged by a jury made up of filmmakers Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Goutam Ghosh, and veteran actor Shabana Azmi.

Sen said his father was not just a film critic and director, but a true film historian. It is such a joy and privilege to be part of the jury of a film competition associated with the name of Chidananda Dasgupta. I had the pleasure of knowing him, ” Azmi said in a message.

He was a true film scholar who read the film as a text in its social and historical context and brought criticism to a global scale, she added.

Ghosh said Dasgupta was one of the pioneers of the film society movement.

The centenary celebrations will also include a Best Costume Designer award instituted as Supriya Dasgupta, who designed the costumes for Amodini de Dasgupta. He will carry a cash prize of Rs 50,000, the spokesperson said.

Dasgupta, one of the founders of the Calcutta Film Society with Satyajit Ray in 1947, was born on November 20, 1921 in Shillong and breathed his last on May 22, 2011 in Kolkata.
