In response to the Taliban’s rapid takeover of Afghanistan following the US withdrawal, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi released a statement via Twitter that was not well received.

“The president is to be commended for the clarity of the purpose of his statement on Afghanistan and of his action,” the statement said. “The Taliban need to know that the world is watching their actions. We are concerned about reports of the brutal treatment by the Taliban of all Afghans, especially women and girls.

The United States, the international community and the Afghan government must do everything possible to protect women and girls from inhuman treatment by the Taliban. As we strive to help them, we must recognize that their voices are important and respect their culture.

The tweet was quickly “ratio” (more responses than likes and more retweets with comments than normal retweets) with many conservatives and some liberals expressing their displeasure that the member for San Francisco has sought to defend the tweet. administration amid chaotic scenes in Kabul. The Biden administration has been widely criticized for its handling of the withdrawal, leaving Afghan allies stranded in the country as the Taliban took over.

“You deserted our allies and translators to be slaughtered,” wrote former host of “The View” Meghan McCain. “Betrayed our veterans and members of the armed forces – some who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan. You can’t run away or Baghdad Bob get away with it while the president and his team are isolated in hiding.”

“The president is on vacation while America’s credibility burns and a new terrorist haven is born,” Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw tweeted. “But okay, ‘congratulate him’.”

“What every head coach says after his QB throws 4 interceptions and you still plan to throw him next week,” added former Jeb Bush spokesman Jesse Hunt.

Others objected to Pelosi’s seemingly soft rhetoric about the Taliban, noting that the Speaker of the House had only expressed “concern.”

Criticism of Pelosi’s statement was not confined to the Right. Many Democrats also disagreed, with some asking the Speaker of the House if the Biden administration planned to accept more Afghan refugees.

“Yikes,” Democratic activist Bree Newsome wrote. “They know it was a major mistake.”

“Well, this all sounds very pathetic,” tweeted British liberal commentator Mike Galsworthy. “Canada is taking immediate action to rescue Afghan refugees. What are your plans? “
