Manchester United hero Rio Ferdinand believes Ben White will prove to be a decent signing for Arsenal but says he needs more help at the Emirates after being exposed in the loss to Brentford.

White had a miserable Premier League start for the Gunners, battling Brentfords Ivan Toney as the top newcomers claimed a 2-0 victory over Mikel Artetas’ side.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have raised concerns over White’s signing in the 50m after the loss and Ferdinand admits the England international needs help to succeed.

However, the former Manchester United and England defender still backs White to be a decent signing for Arsenal.

Ferdinand told YouTube channel FIVE: The problem I have with Arsenal is that you can’t buy players for a year. Ben White is good now, but what you need is someone to come and catch the players on the training ground.

I have the impression that at this stage of his career, Ben White needs a partner to bring him a lot, like a Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane or Thiago Silva.

Arsenal needed a central defender to come and defend. Ben White will end up being a decent signing, but the biggest problem he has is if I was courted with Arsenal now I think who am I playing with?

In Arsenal’s loss to Brentford, Ferdinand added: The way Arsenal played I heard Ian Wright criticize the intensity and I would have been just as good if it was my club.
