BRISBANE, AUG 17, 2021 (NEWS.COM.AU) – Disturbing allegations were made about the lack of police presence in the Brisbane suburb of Coorparoo after Wallabies legend Toutai Kefu was stabbed in his family home on Monday.
A 15-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after Kefu fought for life when three people allegedly broke into his home at 3 a.m. yesterday.
Police allege a brutal and violent brawl broke out after the group was caught breaking into the house on Buena Vista Ave, which resulted in knife-wielding and Kefu stabbing in the stomach.
He was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital in serious condition with abdominal injuries and then underwent life-saving surgery. His wife, son and daughter were also injured in the incident and taken to hospital.
Queensland Police Union chairman Ian Leavers has since claimed there was no local police patrol in Coorparoo over the weekend due to mismanagement.
As reported by The Courier Mail, Mr Leavers said: And to make matters worse, when the Coorparoo Police Night Shift got sick last night (Sunday night) before the shift started, they have not been replaced.
With this kind of mismanagement, it is clear that the people of Coorparoo have been abandoned and left to fend for themselves over the weekend.
I’m not saying that a visible police presence like it should have happened would have stopped the vicious home invasion we saw last night. However, that may be the case.
To have had no police patrol presence there over the weekend is inexcusable and was only a recipe for disaster.
A spokesperson for the Queensland Police Department said police arrived at the scene of the incident within six minutes.
15-year-old boy has been charged with four counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault causing grievous bodily harm and one count each of unlawful motor vehicle use, break and enter , burglary and deprivation of liberty. He has been denied bail and will appear in Brisbane Children’s Court.
The other two reportedly fled the scene in a stolen vehicle bearing the 435VJP license plates, which was allegedly stolen in a burglary at a Flinders Crescent residence in Forest Lake on Monday morning.
A second 15-year-old from Springfield Lakes has been taken into custody after arriving injured at a south Brisbane hospital later that day. A third person is still on the run.
Kefu has played 60 times for the Wallabies, including winning the World Cup in 1999 and making 103 appearances for the Queensland Reds during his career.
He became a cult hero scoring one of the most iconic tries in Bledisloe Cup history in the 2001 series when his last minute five-pointers saw the Wallabies win the trophy.
The 47-year-old is currently the head coach of the Tongan national team.
Police allege that the trio who broke into Kefus’ house were armed with knives, a machete and an ax, all of which were used in the attack.
Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming said Kefus’ wife suffered very severe lacerations on her arms.
An adult man has suffered terrible injuries to her arm and back, and an adult woman has cuts to her hand and arm, Superintendent Fleming said Monday.
It will have a lasting impact on this family due to the trauma.
There is no information to suggest that this was a targeted attack. It is highly likely that this was a burglary gone wrong, which minimizes it.
Detective Superintendent Fleming also said several of the alleged offenders were out on bail on other charges and were attempting to steal car keys from inside the family home.
I understand the residents of the house woke up to noises inside the house and one of the adults went to investigate the noises, he said.
I understand that this person was accosted by at least one of the offenders on the premises and threatened to be stabbed if he did not hand over the keys to the vehicle.
Other family members came to the aid of this person and during this time very serious injuries were inflicted on the family as a result of what we allege to be the actions of the offenders who broke into the house. family.
