STATEN ISLAND, NY A New Jersey man scammed a Staten Island senior for $ 8,500, claiming the money was needed to free his grandson from jail, a police source said.
Juan Cifuentes-Duque, 25, of Elizabeth, has been charged with robbery and possession of stolen property arising from the alleged June 2 scheme.
The events unfolded when the accused telephoned the 78-year-old victim and posed as a lawyer representing his grandson, the source said.
Cifuentes-Duque said the woman her grandson had in a car accident was facing criminal charges, the source said.
The accused said he needed $ 8,500 in bail to release his grandson from prison, the source said.
The woman wired the money to Cifuentes-Duque, the source said.
The accused was arrested on August 9.
He denied the charges later that day during his arraignment in the St. George State Supreme Court.
Subsequently, he was released on his own contract.
His next court date is September 16.
Counsel for the defendants did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on the case.
