Golfers playing on a Dublin course at the end of last week are asked by the Garda Sochna (Gsoc) Ombudsman Commission to come forward as potential witnesses after allegations were made that Garda assaulted three youngsters boys.
The children, aged 12 and 13, said they were assaulted in an incident with three goalies at Sillogue Park Golf Club, Ballymun, last Friday.
While the three guards at the scene denied that anything untoward had happened, an investigation into the allegations was opened.
A senior Garda officer referred the case to Gsoc, an independent Garda monitoring agency that investigates complaints about members of the force. The Garda are required by law to refer certain matters to the Gsoc, including any incident where it is alleged that a person was injured at or around the time they interacted with members of the force.
The assault allegation stems from what Gsoc described as an incident with the boys at the golf club between about 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. last Friday. Garda’s ombudsman is now asking all players who were on the course at the time to come forward as they may have testimonials to give to investigators.
The Gsoc would like to hear from any potential gamers who may have witnessed or captured on mobile footage of the incident, the ombudsman commission said in a statement on Tuesday.
Gsoc added that the incident occurred between the three boys and three plainclothes members of the Garda. He confirmed that the matter was referred to him by a Garda superintendent. He was fired under a section of the Garda Sochna law which mandates the force to dismiss any matter that appears to indicate that the conduct of one or more members of the Garda Sochna could have resulted in death or serious injury to a person.
