Arteta apologizes to Arsenal fans after Brentford loss

Arsenal started the Premier League season with a whimper at Brentford.

Now they have little choice but to make a bang when they meet Chelsea in their home opener this weekend.

Mikel Artetas’ men face off against Thomas Tuchels’ Champions League winners, who are further bolstered by the arrival of 97million Romelu Lukaku to lead their attack – at a time when the Gunners’ own struggles are clear.

Without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Alexandre Lacazette, they gave the Bees an easy ride during their high-level comeback last Friday.

And their lackluster display – where there was overconfidence in attacking young star Emile Smith Rowe and left-back Kieran Tierney – saw the Gunners come under much criticism, especially from the former midfielder general Emmanuel Petit.

The World Cup and Premier League winner told RMC Sport: “Little by little I am losing interest in Arsenal.

“With this way of playing, it doesn’t generate any emotion to watch their games.

“They don’t give me any emotion and I find that I am not getting the trajectory the team has taken in recent years.”

Petits’s assessment was backed by longtime supporter Piers Morgan, who took to social media to hammer away at players and boss Arteta following their loss on Matchday 1.

“I agree. Arsenal’s soul is disintegrating as fast as our performances,” Morgan said.

We need passionate leaders and winners like Petit with a champion mentality.

“No weak headless chickens run by an overwhelmed manager and selfless owners.”

Arsenal will face European champions Chelsea on Sunday in their second game of the new campaign, with more transfers still possible.

But little emphasis is placed on improving the attack that flattered too often deceiving last season – with the exception of the return of Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid.

John Cross reports that Arsenal will have to offload one of their attackers to bring in more firepower – with Lacazette the man most likely to leave.

Monaco and Roma have shown interest in Lacazette who still has one year left on his current contract; Unless he is sold there is unlikely to be a new striker, especially with Eddie Nketiah currently injured.

Whoever Arteta calls to lead the line this weekend, he knows he needs a big performance – especially with the club struggling to sell the Emirates for the London derby.

Arteta is more than aware of the nightmarish scenario that ultimately awaits him if the club’s home support votes with his feet and stays on the sidelines.

He has also been warned by Sheffield United that, with talks on goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, and despite the 23-year-old wanting the transfer, the Championship club will play the ball hard on any switch.

Blades boss Slavisa Jokanovic said on Tuesday: “[It’s] Naturally, he wants to be a Premier League player.

“I’m talking to him, he thinks it might be a good decision for himself but it’s not a bad thing for him if he stays with us.

“At the end of the day, that’s Arsenal’s decision. If they want to, they have to spend a lot of money. It can happen, but it’s something I don’t want. If you ask me if I want to sell it for 100 million, I say NO.

But I can understand the business side of both clubs and Aaron too. He understands very well what I want. I’m not the type to want to sell it at any price. If Arsenal wants to offer 100million and it was up to me, I would say no.

“But I also have to be responsible and careful for the club. He’s a talented English player and I understand Arsenal are interested, but that’s the deal.

“Arsenal pushes on one side and I shoot on the other side.

“Aaron doesn’t have my permission to leave but I understand the situation. I’ll be happier if this guy stays but if that doesn’t happen I’ll wish him all the best.”

Arsenal have just under two weeks to settle their transfer affairs – but on the pitch Arteta must find the answers needed to appease the club’s fans… and quickly.
