By leaving US forces in Afghanistan, President Joe Biden could have prevented the country’s capital from falling to the Taliban terrorist organization over the weekend, US Representative Liz Cheney said in a televised appearance on Monday morning. .
Cheney appeared on CBS This Morning to discuss the situation in Kabul, Afghanistan, which was overtaken by the Taliban over the weekend almost 20 years after US troops ousted the organization in the aftermath of the 11 attacks. September against America.
She blamed both former President Donald Trump and Biden for the steps they took that led to the Taliban’s resurgence.
“In the Trump administration, the deal that was negotiated… was a surrender deal. It was a document which had a certain date for our withdrawal. He guaranteed, pledged to release the prisoners, and… the American people were told that the Taliban would renounce al-Qaeda. Of course, that didn’t happen, ”Cheney said. “Thus, we had delegitimized the Afghan government, negotiated with the Taliban, a terrorist organization, signed an agreement with them. We should never have done this, but President Biden should never have withdrawn his forces. ”
She added that the world now sees what happens when America adopts a policy of surrender, which makes the nation less secure and prolongs the war on terrorism.
“We have truly entered a very dangerous new phase now in the war on terror, created an additional security situation and a danger that we just did not need to create,” she said.
Cheney did not directly answer the question of whether she thinks America needs a permanent presence in Afghanistan. However, she said officials need to determine whether US national security requires military forces to work with the Afghans to prevent the creation of safe havens for terrorists.
“All the men and women who have been deployed to Afghanistan over the past 20 years have helped ensure that we do not have further massive attacks from Afghan territory. They helped keep us safe. They helped prevent the kind of attack we saw on September 11, ”Cheney said.
“So their service was really of crucial importance to our safety,” she continued. “I also think we need to move forward with a commitment to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of their sacrifice, to conduct ourselves in a manner above politics, which examines what the security requirements of nation, and now we need to take a very serious look at how we are, in fact, going to conduct counterterrorism operations around the world given the heightened threat due to this complete withdrawal from Afghanistan.
