When children as young as four show signs of racial prejudice and racism, something must be done. This is the idea behind Dear White Parents, an awareness campaign led by IPG DXTRA, Brooklyn Brothers, the non-profit anti-racist education organization We Are, the Ad Council and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL ).
For generations, black and brown parents have spoken to their children, preparing them for a world that will judge them for their looks.
On the other hand, in a survey of how people’s opinions about race were influenced by their parents, 65% of white adults said their parents rarely or never spoke about race or racism. Those whose parents mentioned it were more likely to have similar conversations with their own children, which had an intergenerational impact. That’s why the Anti-Racism Initiative will give white parents the tools to raise a more inclusive generation.
After 15 months of preparation, Dear White Parents emerged from the aftermath of the June 2020 protests, when Margenett Moore-Roberts, Head of Inclusion and Diversity at IPG DXTRA, felt compelled to act. So she reached out to the Brooklyn Brothers, seeking her creativity and network to help create something that would help raise an anti-racist generation.
The campaign includes a dedicated website, with an organized library of age-focused discussion resources and guides, workshops and anti-racism talks.
It also includes a film directed by Oscar nominee Kevin Wildon Jr and narrated by Dr. Ronda Taylor Bullock, anti-racist educator and executive curator of We Are.
The film shares an intimate take on some illuminating, sometimes uncomfortable, family discussions focused on parents helping their children understand racism through current events, as well as their own stories of how they first became aware of racism. times.
