Southern University vaccine event faces criticism as videos appear online

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – Some people are taking to social media to announce a vaccination event being held at Southern University. The event was held in conjunction with Baton Rouge rapper Boosie and part of the event included outdoor activities where the rapper can be seen performing in front of a crowd of students.

WAFB viewers sent in videos and photos of the event, criticizing that few masks were seen among the crowds of students gathered tightly around campus. A spokesperson for the university defended the event and bragged about the hundreds of doses of vaccine that were distributed because of it.

Like most higher education institutions resuming operations amid COVID-19, the University of the South is encouraging events to promote vaccination against this relentless pandemic. Today’s event was produced by a collective of community partners, all committed to immunization awareness. Although the mask’s mandate does not refer to outdoor events, several messages were released to encourage anyone within a listening distance to mask themselves. To our knowledge, most of the participants were residential students, who have either been vaccinated and / or recently tested negative for COVID-19. It was a very successful event because this population got involved in a way that speaks to them; nearly 200 people received their first dose of the vaccine.

In addition, the university opened a vaccination and testing site at the Horace G. Moody intramural sports complex on campus. The opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
