LINCOLN, Nebraska (AP) Nebraska on Wednesday announced that the NCAA was investigating its football schedule amid allegations Cornhuskers staff misused analysts and consultants with knowledge of coach Scott Frost and even moved the off-campus workouts last year when such activities were banned during the pandemic.
Alberts confirmed the investigation first reported by The Action Network, while Frost said all workouts were approved by his superiors.
Everything we did through COVID was in the best interest and health of our players in mind and everything we did was approved by the sports department administration and the campus administration, a Frost said after training.
Citing unidentified sources, the Action Network report said Nebraska has significant video footage confirming that practice violations took place in the presence of Frost and other aides. Alberts said the investigation began before his hiring was announced on July 14 and discovered it after he began.
We thought it was important that we both come and validate what you’ve all read on the internet and nationally released reports, Alberts said.
The NCAA interviewed Frost, current and former staff, administrators, and football players, and Frost hired a lawyer. The alleged violations have occurred within the past 12 months.
We want you to know that we have been 100% NCAA compliant, have been very collaborative in our approach with them in terms of all of their investigations, Alberts said. We will continue to do everything the NCAA has asked us to do. Our coaches, including Coach Frost, have done a great job and have been very accessible in working with the NCAA as we deal with these allegations.
Alberts said he could not comment further due to the ongoing investigation.
The report comes less than two weeks before the Huskers opened the Frosts’ fourth season with a game against Illinois. Frost, who led the Huskers to the 1997 national championship, returned to his home state alma mater after being named National Coach of the Year for leading Central Florida to a 13-0 record in 2017 .
Frost struggled in Nebraska, going 12-20 in his first three years and has never finished higher than fifth in the Big Ten West. The program has had four consecutive losing seasons, the most consecutive since the late 1950s.
Frost is under contract until 2026 and his current buyout is $ 20 million.
The NCAA investigation includes the inadmissible use by Nebraska of experts performing special team exercises. Analysts are not one of the 10 full-time field assistants and are not allowed to speak with players.
A year ago, the NCAA banned organized workouts due to the pandemic. According to the report, Nebraska has moved its strength training sessions to an undisclosed location off campus to avoid detection under the direction of UN strength and conditioning personnel.
Frost and former Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos had expressed their willingness to play in 2020 after the Big Ten initially canceled their season. The Big Ten turned the tide and implemented an eight-game conference-only schedule from the end of October.
Special teams analyst Jonathan Rutledge was fired in January. Moos unexpectedly announced his retirement in June. Gerrod Lambrecht, chief of staff of Frosts, resigned two weeks ago.
Moos did not respond to a text message from The Associated Press requesting comment.
