A day after the Income Tax (IT) department reportedly found discrepancies in the election affidavit filed by Shiv Sena lawmaker Yamini Jadhav for the 2019 assembly polls, her husband and Sena leader , Yashwant Jadhav, said the allegations were politically motivated before the BMC election. He added that they had not received any communication from any central agency so far. The Shiv Sena has remained silent on the matter.
The IT department can submit its findings to the electoral commission and request its disqualification, which can become a major embarrassment for leader Shiv Sena. The IT department discovered that a Kolkata-based shell company had been used to launder 15 crore by Jadhavs. Findings showed that, according to the affidavit filed by the candidate, she received an unsecured loan, including one from Pradhan Dealers Pvt Ltd of 1 crore. The department said Pradhan Dealers was a front company run and controlled from Kolkata by entry operators.
Yashwant Jadhav, who is the chairman of the standing committee of the Sena-controlled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), said it was a political plot to defame him and Jadhav ahead of the BMC elections. He added that they would speak to authorities if contacted.
So far, we haven’t received a notice from any agency, and they haven’t contacted us either. If the agencies contact us, we will talk to them. It’s a political plot against my wife and me. All the allegations against us are without merit. We are not tied to any shell company as claimed. All of our transactions are clean, he said.
This issue is expected to become another point of contention between the Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the BMC polls in February 2022.
Jadhav is another Sena lawmaker who is in the sights of central agencies after Pratap Sarnaik, who was investigated by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED). Previously, the BJP tried to target Minister Anil Parab, who is considered close to Sena Chief and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
When asked about the allegations against Jadhav, Sena chief spokesperson Arvind Sawant said he was not aware of the issue.
Meanwhile, BJP chief Kirit Somaiya launched an attack on the Jadhav and Sena, claiming they were laundering money through companies located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
I would like to directly ask Yamini and Yashwant Jadhav if they will discuss their financial relationship with Pradhan Dealers Pvt Ltd. The Jadhav family transferred money to two companies in the UAE. But that money was deposited into their accounts by Pradhan Dealers, a Kolkata-based company, Somaiya said at a press conference in Mumbai.
Reacting to the allegations, Yashwant said: This is politically motivated as the BMC elections approach soon. The Siege of Byculla was first won by Yamini and it is a plot to defame us both. When asked if the party had asked them for an explanation of the allegations, he replied: There is no question of being questioned by the party because the leadership knows that we will not do anything illegal.
Despite repeated attempts, Jadhav could not be contacted. Yashwant said: She is caring for her sick mother, who is in critical condition.
