Bruce Arians blames miscommunication over Buccaneers’ illegal extra point attempt

The Buccaneers may have had the strangest game of this preseason when they scored an extra run that counted as zero as they lined up from the 2-yard line, and coach Bruce Arians says that it was his fault.

After a touchdown, the Buccaneers told officials they were going for two, meaning the ball was placed on the 2-yard line. But they still sent their team extra points onto the pitch, in a trick-play formation with starter Bradley Pinion as quarterback and kicker Ryan Succop as running back. When the Bengals’ defense looked ready for the rigged game, the Buccaneers moved on to standard extra points training and Succop kicked the ball through the uprights.

One problem: it’s against the rules. Extra points should be marked on the 15-yard line, and once you tell the umpire to spot the ball on the 2-yard line, you should go for two. The officials correctly judged the game to be aborted and gave the Buccaneers no points.

We had very poor communication on the extra bogus point, Arians said, via the Tampa Bay Times. The kicker didn’t know the rule. You can’t line up and hit him. You don’t get a point for it. Obviously it wasn’t communicated well enough that you couldn’t do it, so it’s up to me.

It’s hard to understand how an NFL team can make such a mistake, but the Arians can at least be happy that his team eliminated that mistake in the preseason.
