Rev. Ralph P. Federico
A review board substantiated a sexual abuse complaint against a now deceased priest who served in several churches in southern Chautauqua County for four decades.
Bishop Michael W. Fisher accepted the board’s recommendations against eight priests on Thursday. Among them was the Reverend Ralph P. Federico, who served in St. James’s and St. John’s churches in Jamestown in the 1960s and 1970s, and then at Our Lady of Lourdes at Bemus Point for nearly two decades.
Priests with well-founded claims against them are added to the list of credible defendants maintained by the Diocese of Buffalo.
Federico, born in Dunkirk, has been named in at least three trials under the Child Victims Act – one filed in August 2019 and two in July 2020.
The most recent lawsuits filed in the Chautauqua County State Supreme Court claim that Federico abused male victims while serving at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church in Jamestown, now SS Peter and Paul. The victims were represented by Jeff Anderson & Associates in New York and lawyer Stephen Boyd in Williamsville.
One man claims to have been sexually assaulted by Federico around 1976 while the other said the abuse occurred around 1974. Both victims were around 10 years old at the time.
He was also named in a lawsuit filed in August 2019, when the Child Victims Act first came into force, which lifted the statute of limitations – even for decades-old allegations.
Federico died in 2007 at the age of 80.
