SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) – The debate over COVID-19 vaccines has sparked strong emotions among people both for and against shooting. But for many people, the decision to avoid the vaccine has no simple explanation.
There are many reasons why people will not get vaccinated, despite the numbers reported to Jackson.
The state health department reported on Friday that 87% of deaths and 89% of hospitalizations from COVID-19 in Mississippi since July 23 are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.
Most of the resistance, however, is around fear, said Gulfport Memorial Hospital, licensed master social worker Wayne Cullinan. Sometimes that fear is fear of needles.
Other times, these fears can be more complex.
Sometimes people get scared because they don’t trust the institutions that are behind the vaccines, Cullinan said. The medical establishment, the companies that manufacture the vaccines, the government.
Dr Ijlal Babar, Director of Critical Lung Care for Singing River Health System, asked his patients about their reluctance to vaccinate for several months in search of an answer.
The nuanced reasoning is something I picked up on as well, Babar said. There isn’t just one reason, and a lot of people have more than one reason.
As the medical community struggles to control COVID-19, it is also looking for ways to make people who are hesitant and resistant to see the benefits of getting vaccinated.
Your fear, whatever it is, whatever the reason or reason for not getting the vaccine, is valid, Cullinan said. It matters. It is important to you therefore it is important. But continuing to live in a world that has COVID is so much scarier.
Doctor, after the doctor says getting more people vaccinated is the only way to get the best of the pandemic. They just don’t know what it will take for this to happen.
I don’t know what convinces people, says Babar. But I always add that my three children, aged 15 to 23, are all vaccinated. And I hope I can convince them that if I could put my 15 year old daughter in and get her vaccinated, I think it’s safe.
