Governor Ron DeSantis took his inspiration from military service in the aftermath of 9/11 and wholeheartedly condemned the haphazard exit of the United States from Afghanistan.
In comments on Saturday in Lakeland, the governor expanded on previously established themes and traced new ground. Specifically, DeSantis lambasted the “Beltway clique”: the “group” elites who embarked on what has become a 20-year American adventure in a country often referred to as the “graveyard of empires.”
DeSantis, speaking on opening monoclonal antibody site, said policy failures run deep in DC
“After 20 years, there have been a lot of failures on the political front. And there is no liability that I have seen. Did one person tend to resign as a result of this? Has anyone been fired? Did we see anything?
“It seems that with our national government, if you are part of the Beltway clique, you will have no consequences. As long as you are part of the group, you can fail upward and continue to fail upward. I think there has to be some responsibility for that, ”DeSantis said, describing the departure as“ humiliating for our country ”and a“ punch for our veterans ”.
DeSantis, who served in Iraq, compared the efforts of those who fought the war to those who planned it from afar in lengthy comments. He noted that for some families, the sacrifice was generational.
“There are people who served and their children served. So there has been a lot of blood and effort, tears and toil there and I understand, you can’t stay there forever, we have to redeploy. But you have to do it by protecting first and foremost the Americans who are there, ”DeSantis said.
Of the “thousands and thousands of Americans” trapped behind Taliban lines in hostile Kabul, DeSantis is apprehensive about their fate.
“I fear the worst is yet to come,” DeSantis said, calling the exit operation “shameful” and inconsistent with the sacrifice of the veterans themselves.
Expect DeSantis to continue hammering President Joe Biden over the outcome of Afghanistan, as that has been a recurring theme in the comments.
Presidents don’t focus. He doesn’t focus on those American lives. And it’s just humiliating as an American to see what’s going on, especially with all the people who have worked and sacrificed there, DeSantis said on Friday in Fort Walton Beach.
The governor addressed Afghanistan earlier this week, accusing Biden at another press conference of lack of leadership. The Florida media comments, not surprisingly, revisited themes repeated earlier in the week for a nationwide television audience on Fox NewsHannityshow Wednesday night.
