As much as the quarterback discussion dominated the 49ers preseason, so has the wide receiver discussion.
Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance have a collective completion percentage of just 40% this preseason. But, when you factor in all the drops in the pass sensors, that completion percentage jumps up to 70%.
Some falls by Jimmys can be attributed to poor ball placement. Regarding Lance throws, NBC Chris Simms offered a different explanation on Pro Football Talk Live:
There is no huge spin or spiral, and it has a wobble. This, to me, perhaps shows a lack of control in football. Anyone will tell you … bullets like this are hard to catch. It’s like a cement brick that comes towards you all the time. [Josh] Allen, [Patrick] Mahomes, [Aaron] Rodgers – they can throw the ball just as hard, but since the ball spins so fast and it’s a perfect spiral, it’s easy to focus on a target when it gets into your hands. Your eyes can stay straight [the end of the football], and because of that perfect spiral, it just sinks into their hands. Now if the ball wobbles, all of a sudden the point hits the palm and you could drop it and do that sort of thing. This is where I would like to see Lance clean it up a bit and become a bit more efficient.
Granted, no quarterback throws spirals all the time, but as Chris said later in the series, when you combine a wobbly soccer ball with the speed with which Lance throws, it’s a tough combination on any receiver, especially without perfect placement of the ball.
Does this completely absolve the blame receptors? Of course not. These guys get paid to grab any pass, not just the perfect ones. But like most things, the blame doesn’t lie on one side alone.
Receivers need to increase the speed of the pitching machine to get used to Lances’ strength, and Lance needs to firm up his mechanics and deliver more catchable football.
