Most Americans accuse President Joe Biden of mismanaging the situation in Afghanistan, but a majority also believe him when he says all Americans remaining in the country will be evacuated.

What happened: According to a new Hill-HarrisX poll of more than 2,800 adults conducted between August 20 and 23, 52% of those polled said Biden’s decision to send back US troops to coordinate evacuations ongoing was proof of Biden’s incompetent handling of the crisis. , while 23% said this did not indicate they were handling the situation poorly and 26% were unsure.

However, 58% of those polled said they trusted the president’s promise to bring home Americans still stranded in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan ahead of its self-proclaimed August 31 deadline, while 42% said that they didn’t believe his promise.

In an interview with Hill.TV, HarrisX CEO and poll chief Dritan Nesho questioned the White House’s efforts to distance itself from the perception that its policies have created the current chaos at Kabul airport. .

“It is difficult for the administration to dispute the facts on the ground, and a majority of voters consider the return of thousands more troops to Afghanistan than there were before the evacuation as a clear indication of the mismanagement of the exit from the country by the Biden administration, ”Nesho said.

Nesho also recalled the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961 which damaged the credibility of the Kennedy administration, noting that Biden’s ability to deliver on his evacuation promise “will be key. of the final verdict of public opinion on whether this event is a ‘Pig’ or a ‘Piglet’ in terms of the scope of this foreign policy debacle.
