Fauci blamed the measles epidemic on Hasidic Jews; Orthodox leaders set the record straight

Orthodox Jewish leaders spoke to Fox News condemning Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Chief Medical Advisor to President Biden, for the flippant remarks Fauci made about the community New York Hasidic Jewess and the 2018-2019 measles epidemic.

Referring to herd immunity, Fauci said: “The threshold is something that we don’t know you have to end up with in a situation like measles, where you were like, well, over 90 percent of people have been vaccinated and have really had this kind of, what we call, herd immunity When it goes below that number you start to see epidemics, as we saw some time ago in the New York area with Hasidic Jews who weren’t getting vaccinated. ”

Dr Fauci said in the CBS appearance that herd immunity to measles is 90-95%, then he mistakenly blamed New York’s Hasidim for the 2018-19 outbreak despite the fact that it started in other states and infected non-Hasidim, “the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council (OJPAC) told Fox News in a statement.

“He seems to ignore that only 80% of Hasidim in New York City are eligible for a full measles vaccination, which means that during an epidemic, he can more easily attack the Hasidim due to age; no reluctance to vaccinate, ”added OJPAC.

“In fact, 96% of school-aged children have been fully immunized, but there is just such a large portion of the population in the age group that is not eligible for partial or full immunization. This factor , added to the fact that measles mainly attacks young people, means that the Hasidim may suffer more during an epidemic despite following vaccination mandates at a very high rate, ”the statement concluded.

“For Dr. Fauci to point the finger and say that the New York Hasidim did not vaccinate is categorically false, and it fits the stereotype of the cancerous, parasitic and dirty Jew in an era of heightened anti-Semitism,” Yaakov Menken, chief executive of the Coalition for Jewish Values, told Fox News.

“When in doubt, blame the Jews,” Rabbi Yisroael Kahan, New York area rabbi and member of the Rockland County Human Rights Commission, wrote on Twitter. He cited figures from the New York State Department of Health showing that the vaccination rate in Jewish schools in Brooklyn is 96%.

NIAID has not responded to Fox News’ request for comment at press time.
