We can wonder if White House press secretary Jen Psaki has ever been good at her job – no, Ms Psaki, the CDC director doesn’t speak in her personal capacity about public health policies – but signs that this White House is overwhelmed by the crisis in Afghanistan is building up.
Congresswoman Susan Wild, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. In the last election cycle, she backed Bernie Sanders, then Joe Biden, saying the nation must be led by a president who has compassion, competence, humility and grace. Wild has been supported by unions, EMILY’s List, Everytown for Gun Safety, the Human Rights Campaign, NARAL Pro-Choice America, the NEA, NOW, the SEIU, the AFL-CIO, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and the Sierra Club . She is a full democrat, with a political figure that is the opposite of her last name. Wild is not a Tulsi Gabbard maverick, nor a Joe Manchin. It doesn’t throw sand into the gears.
And yesterday, Wild admitted a harsh truth that the administration continues to deny:
While it is clear to me that we cannot continue to put the US military at risk for an impossible war, I also believe that the evacuation process appears to have been gravely mismanaged. To move forward, we need answers and responsibilities for the cascading failures that have brought us to this point. Our troops deserve nothing less than a complete and unvarnished truth.
To many NR readers, Wild’s criticism is exceptionally soft and an understatement.
Nonetheless, today Psaki said she doesn’t have a specific response to Wild’s comments that it’s easy to throw stones or be an outside critic.
What makes Wild’s comments meaningful is that she’s not a bomb thrower, and isn’t a member fighting with the administration for cable news appearances. Wild does not throw stones at a president of his own party for the sake of throwing stones. When someone like Wild publicly denounces cascading failures, it is a signal to the administration that there is no point in disputing it any longer. It’s clear to anyone with eyes.
If Jen Psaki attacks a Democrat member of the Foreign Affairs Committee like Tucker Carlson or Sean Hannity… it is a sign that the tensions in the White House are even worse than what we can see.
