WHITEHORSE – Yukon’s top doctor and federal Liberal candidate in the territory disputes claims that his decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic was influenced by draft candidacies.
Dr Brendan Hanley, who is on leave as Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Yukon, said in a statement that he has always behaved fairly and impartially in his role.
Yukon Party leader Currie Dixon has criticized Hanley’s decision to run during the pandemic, writing in an open letter that she raises questions about the decision-making process.
Hanley said he was disappointed to hear criticism of his professional and personal integrity, adding that it is these unfounded personal attacks that cause people to stay out of politics.
He took a leave of absence before announcing his candidacy in early August, seeking to replace incumbent MP Larry Bagnell.
Yukon Premier Sandy Silver said during Hanley’s run announcement that he was confident the territory’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic would continue smoothly.
