For military veterans like myself, to claim that someone is in breach of their duty is a serious accusation. A recent letter to the editor accuses the Douglas County Council of Commissioners of abdicating their duty in regards to the local response to COVID-19.
These are the same commissioners who: 1) quickly formed a COVID response team led by the CEO of AVIVA Health, who is also a retired army colonel with extensive experience in the emergency medical field. . 2) Increase in DPHN staff and help facilitate the first trial in state screening clinics. 3) Provided the necessary resources to ensure the availability of vaccines in each local community. 4) Send daily information regarding best practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
A rule of the political game is never to let a good crisis go to waste. It is unfortunate that some see this crisis as a political opportunity to paint a false narrative with the brush of blame. Considering the magnitude of the work and effort that these commissioners have put into dealing with COVID-19, it is truly reprehensible to claim that they are literally killing people. An assertion which grossly exaggerates the level of influence of the Commissioners on this crisis while at the same time implying a cold contempt for human life.
In the military, I have served under the direction of remarkable leaders under extraordinary circumstances. They place the livelihoods and security of their soldiers at the top of their agenda. These Commissioners have as much character, insight and leadership capacity as any I have ever served under; and I have seen with my own eyes that the livelihood and security of this community is their highest priority. To shamelessly claim that they put politics above their duty is a baseless claim.
