For the second time in a week, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau saw a campaign event disrupted by protesters shouting obscenities, uttering death threats against the Prime Minister and hurling racist and misogynistic slurs against people of color and women in its protective details.
As they gave a keynote speech to promote his party’s climate change policies in Cambridge, Ont. On Sunday morning, the Liberals were forced to delay Trudeau’s appearance by an hour due to the disruption.
Placards held up by angry protesters carried slogans such as “Who benefits from confinement? and the “liberals ruined the country”, with a protester shouting through a megaphone adorned with the name; “InfoWars,” a US-based far-right conspiracy theory website.
When the event began, he was disturbed by horns and foul, threatening language thrown by a crowd of people – almost all of whom were unmasked and did not maintain a physical distance from each other.
When asked if he thinks it is safe to continue hosting campaign events, Trudeau said his message on climate change and immunization was not one he would give up.
“No, I am not going to back down on a message that Canadians know this is the right way to go, and that is why Canadians must choose to move Canada forward at this pivotal time,” Trudeau said.
CBC News was in attendance when a protester shouted a racist remark at a police officer of color over the detail of Trudeau’s protection, while another protester was heard making misogynistic remarks to a police officer about the detail.
“First of all, I want to thank the police, local and national, who do an incredible job both keeping people safe and giving Canadians a voice,” Trudeau said. “This is the raison d’être of an election. We can disagree with them, and of course, we will always condemn violence and hatred.”
“This must make us ever more convinced of the importance of choice in this election. Do we fall into division and hatred and racism and violence, or do we say no.”

Trudeau has been harassed by protesters during several of his campaign events. He was forced to cancel a campaign event in Bolton, Ont. On Friday night when hundreds of angry protesters showed up at the open-air Liberal rally.
Among Friday’s protesters were anti-vaccination activists shouting vulgarities at Liberal volunteers and carrying anti-Trudeau signs and flags scribbled with obscenity. The crowd was frustrated with Trudeau’s pressure to make vaccines mandatory in some settings and his support for provincial passports for vaccines to restrict entry into some non-essential businesses.
Video footage from the event shows a handful of people wearing conservative-branded blue T-shirts among the unmasked crowd gathered for the protest, which also included a large contingent of people angry at the federal government’s ban on flavorings in smoking cessation devices, such as electronic cigarettes.
Conservatives ban protesters from volunteering
In response to the behavior, Conservative candidate Kyle Seeback said his campaign volunteers who attended the protest are no longer welcome to his campaign team.
“My campaign has zero tolerance for obscenities or threatening behavior against any candidate,” Seeback said.
Speaking at an event in Fredericton on Saturday, Conservative leader Erin O’Toole said he was trying to run a positive campaign and “strongly condemned all forms of harassment” during the election campaign.
“We should have a healthy and respectful debate. We don’t have time for the people who bring negativity to the campaign. I urge everyone to put the country and our democracy first, let’s have a positive debate This is my approach, and this is what I expect from every member of our team, ”he said.
“I expect professionalism, I expect respect. I respect my opponents
