Shahid Afridi gets involved in another controversy

Former Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi has a knack for getting involved in controversy. The versatile star has once again made headlines for his recent comments on the Taliban. He sympathized with the group, which took control of Afghanistan, saying they “came with a very positive spirit”. Afridi was seen talking about them in a recent video shared by Pakistani journalist Naila Inayat.

This is what Afridi said

Speaking to Pakistani media on Monday, Afridi said, “The Taliban came with a very positive spirit. They allow women to work. And I think the Taliban are very fond of cricket. “The Taliban gives women jobs, also supports cricket and the Pakistan cricket series. The Taliban are very positive about cricket,” added the former Pakistani skipper.

What is going on in Afghanistan?

The Taliban, an insurgent group infamous for their violence and human rights abuses, regained control of Afghanistan earlier this month. They had captured many key cities before reaching Kabul. Former President Ashraf Ghani also fled the country on August 15. The return of the Taliban coincided with the decision of the United States to withdraw its troops after 20 years of war.

Afridi, in the video, hinted that the Taliban group has given people some freedom to resume their activities. On the contrary, several Afghans, especially women, fled the country, fearing the gravity of the situation. American soldiers also left Afghanistan, completing a complicated withdrawal and ending America’s longest war. Notably, more than 1,23,000 people left Kabul by plane.

Afridi criticized Prime Minister Modi last year

Afridi also made headlines last year for all the wrong reasons. A video appeared on social media that showed Afridi criticizing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a huge crowd in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The former Pakistani cricketer was seen denouncing Modi in the video. Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh and former opener Gautam Gambhir had criticized Afridi for the same.

Afridi featured in Kashmir Premier League

Afridi recently participated in the Kashmir Premier League. He helped the Rawalakot Hawks win the title after beating the Muzzaffarabad Tigers by eight points in the final. The versatile star has represented Pakistan for nearly two decades.
