Following a video that toured local YouTube channels reporting corruption in the placement of doctors in public hospitals, the health ministry dismissed the allegations.
Uploaded on August 27, the “reporter” in the video read a letter from an unidentified doctor who claimed she was fairly fired for not paying bribes to her. employers.
This document inferred that the alleged complainant was female because in her letter she said she wanted to be placed in a medical facility near her home where she could breastfeed her baby.
According to the report, the woman was asked to pay a bribe of Rwf 1 million to be placed in a hospital of her choice. She did not and claimed that she had been transferred to another hospital far from home, the allegations were made.
However, the health ministry rejected this claim, saying it was not based on any truth.
“It doesn’t seem real because the ‘doctor’ says they have done a six-month medical internship while all Rwandan doctors are subject to a full year of internship,” read a statement from the ministry.
The ministry questions the authenticity of the alleged victim because it is known practice that the internship lasts a full year.
Doctors who have completed their internship are sent to work in the hospital of their choice depending on the location of the post, and on the basis of the marks they have obtained during their studies, the selection is made before the others. On August 29, the ministry placed 337 doctors who had completed their internship in different hospitals while 141 began their internship.
The process, according to the ministry, took place in a transparent manner, in the presence of these doctors, under the supervision of the Ministry of Health.
“Each doctor chose a hospital of their choice, but those with high marks made their selection first until all positions were filled,” the statement read.
After the selection, those who were not satisfied were able to voluntarily exchange their positions, the statement added.
The placement of doctors aims to provide equitable access to health care to all Rwandan citizens, regardless of their location.
The procedure is carried out transparently, via distribution channels and social media, according to the ministry.
The statement also calls on media professionals to ensure that they are disseminating accurate information, especially in relation to health reporting, in order to avoid undue speculation.
