Piers Morgan did not break the broadcast code when he commented negatively on the Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, Ofcom ruled.
Morgans’ remarks on Good Morning Britain – which ultimately led him to quit the show – drew a record 57,000 complaints to Ofcom, including one from the Duchess herself.
In the interview with Oprah, the Duchess said she had thoughts of suicide. But Morgan told viewers the next day: I’m sorry, I didn’t believe a word of what she said. Meghan Markle – I wouldn’t believe it if she read me the weather report.
The watchdog ruled that ITV’s program did not violate the broadcast code, although Morgans’ comments were potentially damaging and offensive because he was entitled to free speech.
“Potentially harmful and offensive to viewers”
An Ofcom spokesperson said: It was a finely balanced decision.
Mr Morgan’s comments were potentially harmful and offensive to viewers, and we recognize the strong public response to them.
But we have also fully taken into account freedom of expression. Under our rules, broadcasters can include controversial opinions as part of a legitimate debate in the public interest, and the significant challenge to Mr Morgan from other contributors provided important context for viewers.
Nonetheless, we reminded ITV to pay more attention to discussions of mental health and suicide content going forward. ITV might consider the use of timely warnings or flagging of help desks to ensure viewers are properly protected.
“Brilliant victory”
Morgan said Ofcom’s move was a resounding victory.
He tweeted: I am delighted that Ofcom has approved my right not to believe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s inflammatory allegations to Oprah Winfrey, many of which have been proven to be false. It’s a resounding victory for free speech and a resounding defeat for Princess Pinocchios. Do I get my work back?
Morgan’s comments were the most criticized moment in Ofcom history.
The Duchess has personally reached out to ITV to say Morgan’s attitude could prove detrimental to other people with mental health issues.
Morgan was ordered by ITV bosses to apologize. He refused and quit the program.
