Piers Morgan RELEASED by Ofcom after criticizing Meghan Markle

PIERS MORGAN has been cleared of any wrongdoing following comments he made about Meghan Markle following his interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year.

UK broadcast watchdog Ofcom has described attempts to silence the former host of Good Morning Britain (GMB) as a “frightening restriction on free speech”, following a wave of over 50,000 complaints that ultimately saw Morgan lose his job at ITV.

Meghan Markle is said to have personally contacted ITV bosses to complain that Morgan’s questioning of her account of racism within the Royal Household, as well as her allegations of having suicidal thoughts were “harmful” and “offensive” for viewers.

Morgan was offered the opportunity to apologize for his live comments, but declined and decided to resign instead.

In a statement, the watchdog said: “Ofcom is clear that, in accordance with free speech, Mr Morgan had the right to say that he did not believe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s allegations and to hold and express firm opinions which rigorously disputed their account. “

They added that their broadcasting code “allows individuals to express strong and well-argued opinions, including those which are potentially harmful or very offensive, and broadcasters to include them in their programming.”

Speaking to the Daily Mail after the Ofcom announcement, Morgan said: “This is a resounding victory for free speech and a resounding defeat for Princess Pinocchios. In light of this decision, am I getting my job back?

ITV CEO Dame Carolyn McCall is now under pressure to explain why she tried to suppress Morgan’s free speech so easily.

I am delighted that OFCOM has approved my right not to believe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s inflammatory allegations to Oprah Winfrey, many of which have been proven to be false. In March, Markle sat down alongside her husband, Prince Harry, to conduct an interview with their friend Oprah, exploring their infamous exit from the royal family.

During their conversation, Meghan and Harry dropped a number of ‘bombs’, including – notably – accusing an anonymous member of the royal family of making a racist comment about their skin color. unborn baby Archie.

The next day, Morgan responded to numerous claims from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on GMB, saying he “didn’t believe a word” came out of Meghan’s mouth.

Critics of Morgan have accused him of a racially motivated attack on Meghan, while his supporters have insisted that as a journalist he has every right to disbelieve his side of the story.

“I wasn’t going to apologize for not believing Meghan Markle, because the truth is I don’t believe Meghan Markle,” Morgan wrote in a Daily Mail column.

“And in a free democratic society, I should be allowed to disbelieve someone and say I don’t believe them. Surely that is the essence of free speech? If I said I believed now Meghan, I would be lying to the public, the very thing that I accused her of doing. “

In the weeks that followed, more than a dozen claims made by Meghan and Harry turned out to be false – such as their claim that they were married in a secret ceremony by the Archbishop of Canterbury days before their official royal wedding, which the Archbishop has denied – or to be completely unverifiable.
