The CEO and co-founder of the nearly $ 2 billion upscale salad chain Sweetgreen has apparently blamed overweight people for the high death toll in the United States from the coronavirus pandemic.

“78% of COVID hospitalizations are from obese and overweight people,” Sweetgreen CEO and co-founder Jonathan Neman said in a LinkedIn post this week. “Is there an underlying issue that we may not have paid enough attention to? Is there another way to think about how we approach “healthcare” by addressing the root cause? ” he said.

As of September 1, 634,320 people in the United States have died from COVID-19 according to the World Health Organization.

Obesity is one of many medical conditions listed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as particularly at risk of becoming “seriously ill” from COVID-19 infection, resulting in hospitalization and potentially death.

“COVID is here to stay for the foreseeable future,” Neman said in the post. “We cannot run away from it and no vaccine or mask will save us.”

Sweetgreen CEO Jonathan Neman posted this on LinkedIn regarding deaths from the pandemic. He removed it later. LinkedIn

Although Neman noted that he is vaccinated and encourages others to do the same, his subsequent suggestions for curbing the ongoing pandemic have each focused on individual health rather than widely recommended solutions like masking and vaccinations.

“We quickly put in place mask and vaccine warrants but no conversation about HEALTH MANDATES,” he wrote. “All the while, we have been printing unlimited money to lessen the blow the closures have caused our country. What if we focus on the ROOT CAUSE and use this pandemic as a catalyst to create a healthier future ??

He also cited the warrants on masks and vaccines as “government overreach” while calling for new taxes on processed foods.

“We clearly have no problem with the government’s hype on how we live our lives in the name of ‘health’, but we create more problems than we solve,” he said. .

Neman deleted the post on Wednesday afternoon after it was picked up by Vice, but not before people started commenting.

“This message is disgusting,” wrote one commentator. “Yep, it’s incredibly big phobic,” wrote another person. “Have you given any thought to how our health care system systematically underestimates people considered to be in these groups? “

Neman said the commentator made “a few good points” and did not intend to be phobic with his post. “We have work to do to make healthy food more accessible and affordable.”
