Police have opened an investigation into a senior justice official for serious allegations that could lead to a lengthy prison term, Channel 12 reported on Thursday.
A silence order has been issued on the details of the investigation, which is overseen by Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, State Attorney Amit Aisman and Israel Police Chief Kobi Shabtai.
No details were given on the nature of the charges.
Channel 12 said Aisman this week asked top police investigators to look into the case and report to him quickly. The case is being handled by the Lahav Serious Crimes Unit 433.
A senior law enforcement official told Channel 12 that it was a “particularly sensitive and complicated investigation.”

The official said that if even some of the allegations turn out to be true, “it will be hard to believe and understand that this really happened.”
Lawyer Chur Uriel Nizri, representing those who filed the complaint, told Channel 12 that the case would be a “judgment day” for the justice system.
“We have to ask ourselves some serious questions, including how did we not identify this? How did such a person manage to penetrate the heart of justice? Nizri said.
The lawyer said he was confident that although the case involves a senior official, the justice and law enforcement systems will show that “everyone is equal before the law.”
The climate crisis and responsible journalism
As an environmental reporter for The Times of Israel, I try to convey the facts and science behind climate change and environmental degradation, explain – and criticize – official policies affecting our future, and describe the Israeli technologies that can be part of the solution.
I am passionate about the natural world and disheartened by the dismal lack of awareness of environmental issues of most of the public and politicians in Israel.
I am proud to do my part to keep The Times of Israel readers properly informed on this vital topic – which can and must lead to policy change.
